What is SkillsFuture Credit?
- SkillsFuture Credit strives to promote individual ownership of skills development and lifelong learning.
- Skillsfuture is a nationwide movement to provide Singaporeans with the chances to progress their fullest potential throughout life, regardless of their starting points. Through this SkillsFuture movement, the skills, passion and contributions of every Singaporean will drive Singapore’s next phase of development towards an excellent economy and inclusive community.
- No matter where they are in life, Singaporean will find a variety of courses to help you attain mastery of skills. Skills mastery is more than having university qualifications and being good at what they do currently; it is a mindset of continually striving towards greater excellence through knowledge, application and experience. With the help of the SkillsFuture Singapore and training providers such as Knowles Training Institute, employers, unions – Singaporeans can enjoy and have a better future with skills mastery and lifelong learning.
- All Singaporeans that are above the age of 25 receive SkillsFuture credit of SGD 500 from January 2016. This SkillsFuture Credit will not expire, and you may accumulate your credit for a range of eligible SkillsFuture courses.
- This 1st of October 2020, the Singapore Government will provide a one-off SkillsFuture Credit Top-up of SGD$500 for all eligible Singaporeans aged 25 or above by the 31st of December 2020.
- Singaporeans that are aged between 40 to 60 by 31st of December 2020 will also receive an Additional SkillsFuture Credit (This is called the Mid-Career Support scheme) of SGD$500. These new SkillsFuture Credit reserves will expire on 31st of December 2025.
What is SkillsFuture Credit for?
- The SkillsFuture movement supports Singaporeans in their lifelong pursuit of skills mastery. It helps Singapore in its transformation into an advanced economy. It also aims at helping Singaporeans build relevant skills in their areas of interest, to maximise their potential and fulfil their personal and career aspirations.
- The SkillsFuture Credit was introduced in 2015 with an important message that every Singaporean is in charge of their own pursuit of skills mastery and their lifelong learning journey. It is meant to instil individual agency, encourage individuals to take up training and promote the culture of lifelong learning.
What is the one-off SkillsFuture Credit Top-Up about?
- To support Singaporeans to continue learning, the Government will grant a one-off SkillsFuture Credit Top-Up of SGD$500 for all eligible Singaporeans on 1 October 2020.
- This SkillsFuture Credit Top-Up is in addition to the SkillsFuture Credit of SGD$500 from 2015. Any remaining credit from this top-up will expire on 31 December 2025.Â
- For Singaporeans that are aged 25 and above and who have not used their SkillsFuture credit to-date will, accordingly, have SGD$1,000 available in the SFC account.
Why is The SkillsFuture Credit only accessible to Singaporeans that are aged 25 and above only?
- The SkillsFuture Credit is for Singaporeans who have commonly completed their full-time education and are in the workforce or that are about to join the workforce. It supports working adults to invest in their continued learning journey and be active lifelong learners.
- SkillsFuture Credit is just one form of help available to help Singaporeans upskill and reskill. The Ministry of Education and Skillsfuture Singapore provide ample course fee subsidies for the local workforce to take up training. Those aged 30 years old and below can also tap on their Post-Secondary Education Account for upgrading their skills through approved courses by the Institutes of Higher Learning, public agencies and other corporate training providers.
Are SkillsFuture Credit top-up available For Singapore Citizens who turn 25 years old from 1 January 2021
- This SkillsFuture Credit top-up is only for Singapore Citizens that are 25 years old or above by 31 December 2020.
- For Singapore citizens turning 25 years old from 1st of January 2021, they will receive their SkillsFuture Credit account activation letter in the first quarter of the same year, informing them of the opening credit of SGD $500, which does not expire.
Why will those aged 40 to 60 years olf get an Additional SkillsFuture Credit (Mid-Career Support)?Â
- The additional SkillsFuture Credit (Mid-Career Support) is directed at Singaporeans who are currently 40 and 50s years old and have 10 to 30 years before retirement, to help them seize new opportunities in the economy. The additional SkillsFuture Credit (Mid-Career Support) gives an additional boost to enable them to access reskilling and upskilling opportunities, which are especially important for this group as they still have significant runway in their careers, and will need to reskill and upskill to be prepared for future technological disruptions. In particular, this SkillsFuture Credit top-up will enable them to better access career transition programmes and improve their employability.
- The accouncement made at the recent Budget 2020, all Singapore Citizens aged 25 and over in 2020, including those aged above 60 years old, will receive a SGD $500 top-up to their SkillsFuture Credit accounts that can be used for a big range of approved training programmes. This is over and above the SGD $500 provided when the SFC was first introduced in 2015.
Why are Permanent Residents in Singapore not eligible for SkillsFuture Credit?
- The SkillsFuture Credit is directed at helping Singaporeans in their learning and skills development, that is in line with the Government’s commitment to providing support for Singaporeans to maximise their potential throughout life and ensure good jobs.
Are new Singapore Citizens eligible for The SkillsFuture Credit?
- Yes, new Singapore Citizens that are aged 25 years old and above will be eligible for the SkillsFuture Credit after they have obtained their Singapore citizenship. SSG will notify them about their SkillsFuture Credit accounts and when they will be able to start using their SkillsFuture credit.
- As the SkillsFuture Credit Top-Up and the Additional SkillsFuture Credit (Mid-Career Support) is a one-off given by the Government on 1 October 2020,
- New Singapore Citizens that are aged 25 years and above after the 31st of December 2020 will not be eligible to get the SkillsFuture Credit Top-Up.
- New Singapore Citizens aged 40 to 60 years old after 31 December 2020 will not be eligible to get the Additional SkillsFuture Credit (or Mid-Career Support).
